West Ham hate figures
Do we always have one?

Was thinking what with Nolan, Reo-Coker, and Lampard that's one for pretty much every season for the last 15 years or so. A recent thing or has it always been this way?

Re: West Ham hate figures
They fall into two groups really, those who have left the club and the way they've gone about it (Lampard, Ince, Defoe..) and those who are hated while playing for the club.

I don't think there are many that fall into the latter category. Obviously there's Nolan at the moment (although I think it's more a case of it being directed at the manager for picking him). And going back to the 90s Lee Chapman springs to mind. Perhaps there are others I don't remember.

There are quite a lot that haven't been very good but still popular (CFC, Dailly, Spector to name but a few) but generally I think we're supportive, given some of the crap we've had to endure!

Chapman was ok for a while but by the end he took a lot of stick, booing when he got the ball etc. I think, like Nolan, his legs had gone by then.

Surely Lampard falls into both?

Jimmy Neighbour and David Kelly were not popular I seem to remember, the latter as he came from Spurs I guess. Gary Breen for obvious reasons was unpopular, don't think I've seen a more inept player in a West Ham shirt.

I think most of the hostility has come since he left. From what I remember he wasn't hated as a player while here. There were accusations of him not being subbed due to nepotism etc but he was a far better player than Nolan.

Re: West Ham hate figures
I think it's slightly more of a recent thing because of the access we have to figures at the club - we can see every performance, and read rumours and opinions about them or players like them every day. Also the rise of fanzines and then sites like this promote discussion and strong opinions of players.

There's a difference between a small pocket of supporters hating a player, like CFC gets on this forum, and what the wider fanbase thinks. I don't think Reo Coker was ever a hate figure outside of small pockets of fans for example.

Bishop got some stick towards (97ish) the end of his time with us. I was too young to remember his heyday, although I always here good things.

The hatred for Lee Chapman suprises me.

Lanky centre forward that had one good season and dined out on it for years.

Likes to knock his bird about.

You'd think he would tick a lot of boxes for some on here.

Fans always have players they don't rate as the game is all about opinions...

My old man used to think that Pat Holland was dog shit (way before my time, of course) and he actually lives in BOATminster now so he can cunt him off every time he sees him in the town centre...

He loves it...

I thought Repka split the fans into two camps. You either loved his gun-ho slightly reckless and sometimes well over the top tackles, decisions etc or despised him for his unprofessionalism .
i thought he was great
